Happy Earth Day!

April 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

EarthBetween personal appearances, receptions, and blog signings on this most holy and sacred day of the environment, I don’t have time to write much.  Check out this article from Shanghai Daily which reports on local reactions to Earth Day. My favorite interviewee is Mr. Liu:

Liu Huaidong, 49, streetside gardener

Q1: What does Earth Day mean to you? Is it important?

A1: Never heard of it. But it’s important to tell people to stop littering.

Q2: Are you “green”?

A2: I have been working in a gardening company for three years. The number of flower beds is growing, yet the rubbish you find hidden in the flower beds is growing as well. Tissues, plastic bottles and bags, wrappings, cigarette butts - you name it.

Every morning I spend four hours cleaning out the garbage, and putting fresh flowers along the street. One hour later, I have to clean up the trash all over again.

I used to litter too and spit on the street - it’s a casual practice. After I started this job, I changed my habits.

I want to meet him!

While you’re between the covers of the Shanghai Daily, check out this bit of humor by a Mr. Fred J.M. Slot.
