I’m a bit tied up today, but feeling quite cheerful. Enjoyed a beautiful blue sky Sunday here in Shanghai and we’re having another nice day today. The picture below was taken at noon–yes, that is real blue sky and real clouds. I provide this picture to show those of you who may be reading the articles about the bad air in Beijing that China’s air quality is not consistently and uniformly bad. Over my three years in Shanghai it has gotten appreciably better (of course, Shanghai at least attempts to limit the new cars on its roads). I still have hope that with a little wind and rain things will clear up in Beijing as well and they won’t have to go to Plan B (or is that Plan C, maybe D, I’m getting confused).

I also hope that Beijing will not go to Plan B:)
Btw: What Beijing said against CNN’s report is interesting: we should use numbers but not only pictures to show the air quality:)

That is a good point. I suspect that the recent poor visibility in Beijing was caused by water vapor given the hot and humid conditions, however, particulates certainly played a part as even the governments numbers showed levels above 100 for several days running. Some pollutants can not be seen, of course, so Beijing’s argument is correct: we should primarily rely on the air monitoring results.
