Olympic Opening Ceremonies

August 9th, 2008 · No Comments

OlympicsMy favorite shot was the aerial that followed the fireworks from Tiananmen Square to the Olympic venues.  Most surprising non-visual feature captured by television: the heat.  The fluttering fans and sweat-sheened faces gave a strong impression of how hot it must have been in the stadium.  Take away reaction: relief.  I don’t remember any of the past Opening Ceremonies, and last night’s is already fading from memory.  This is good news for China.  A truly memorable event could only be produced by something horrible happening.  I’m glad the whole thing is over with, and everyone can walk away in one piece.

If you want to see the show up close, The Big Picture folks have some nice shots.  Don’t miss the big version of this one (last shot in the series):

Olympic Rings

It shows the Chinese spirit I love.

Now, let’s get the sports started, and do not (barring some environmental or energy miracle or catastrophe) expect any more comments on the Olympics here.

Update: Turns out my favorite shot was faked, enhanced, and pre-recorded. Is nothing sacred?  Actually it brings up a good point.  With the improvements in 3D technology will there be any need for “live” Opening Ceremonies in the future?  A splendid new world awaits the Olympic floor show genre!
