Environmental Cartoons

October 18th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Orient Today’s Saturday cover featured caricatures of two Vice Governors of Henan Province promoting energy conservation and pollutant reductions.  The cartoons were originally published in a booklet that was “distributed to government departments, including administrative offices, public security bureaus, courts and procuratorates.”  By Western standards, the images contain neither remarkable visuals nor sidesplitting humor, but Chinese officials rarely place themselves in positions where their dignity is compromised (in public that is–as with officials everywhere, all bets are off in private), so these are a bit novel for China.

For your viewing pleasure, I’ve reproduced them below. Vice Governor of Henan Province, Zhang Dawei is holding the 减排 (reduce discharges) sign, and Vice Governor Shi Jichun, is holding the节能 (conserve energy) sign.

So two provinces are making public pushes to clean up the environment. Great! I hope that when they run afoul of nationally connected industries or PLA industries the hammer of reality does not come down and them and force them to “retire”.
