China’s energy consumption per unit of GDP fell 3.46% over the first three quarters according to a report in China Petroleum Daily. For the third quarter, energy use per unit of GDP fell 0.58 pct, according to Yu Cong, director of the energy efficiency center under the Energy Research Institute. If this is so, it would suggest that efficiency gains started to slow in the second half of year. For a skeptics view on China’s energy efficiency numbers, check out “China Gets Greener? Power and Growth Data Cannot Be Trusted?“ CELB will wait for the year-end numbers to make any comments regarding the data.

Good point Fons, the curious thing, however, is that the rate of improvement actually started to slow in the second of the year when you would have expected to start picking up a “slowing economy” effect.
