Kunming’s Arsenic Lake Contamination Trial (First Hand Report)

April 24th, 2009 · No Comments

You may recall that last week we said we had a reporter stationed outside the Chengjiang County courthouse ‘round the clock waiting to bring you news of the verdict in the criminal trial of Yunnan Chengjiang Jinye Corporation for polluting Yangzonghai Lake with arsenic.  It pains me to confess to our loyal readers that we sort of made that one up.  Truth be told we don’t have any reporters here at CELB.

But, all’s well that ends well!  It turns out that Alex Wang, Senior Attorney and Director of the Natural Resources Defense Council’s China Environmental Law Project was there, and he has written a must-read account on the NRDC’s blog Switchboard, View from China: the Yunnan arsenic spill criminal trial.  As Alex notes “It is not often one gets the chance to see a criminal trial in China, particularly one with national attention,” so don’t miss this story.  You can follow Alex on Twitter @greenlawchina.
