I am heading to the program “Call for Green China” (or “Hailing for Green China” as the Chinese invitation puts it) this afternoon. It is co-hosted by China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) and the World Bank, and sponsored by the Norwegian Embassy.
It starts with a Workshop featuring speakers from the hosts, sponsor, and Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau, among others. I am particularly looking forward to the presentation on the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan of Environmental Development.”
After the Workshop is a dinner followed by a performance of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People performed by the National Theatre Company of China. Does this play get performed often in China? I can’t imagine it does given its theme, but I guess its showing tonight is an encouraging sign. It is an inspired selection by the Norwegian sponsors, given the pollution v. prosperity plot line. After Shanghai, the performance heads to Nanjing, Wuhan, and Changsha.
Of course, if there is any news at the workshop or play, I’ll fill you in tomorrow.
